Functionalized surfaces make self-floating particles faster

For the experiments, the scientists distributed so-called Janus particles – here polystyrene particles coated on one side with gold (diameter approx. 1 µm) – between two glass substrates in water. These were then illuminated from below with green laser light. The particles then began to move – driven by the asymmetrical local heating.
