The father of a family had to do without his scientific work for almost four years. Aktas was Associate Professor at Sakarya University in Turkey before he was imprisoned as a result of the military coup. Two years ago he fled with his family across the Mediterranean to Germany. The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation's Philipp Schwartz Initiative helps persecuted academics like Muharrem Aktas to regain a foothold.
